In the early days, this winery grew in both recognition and quality through its acceptance of displaced Bordeaux winemakers – set adrift after the phylloxera epidemic known as the Great French Wine Blight devastated the majority of France’s wine regions from 1863 on. Founder Felipe Ugalde welcomed these winemakers to Rioja, and the exchange of ideas, styles, and knowledge ushered in an era of prosperity for the region. His efforts led to the creation of the official Rioja D.O.C. – and the Ugalde legend was just beginning. It’s grown over the last century plus, and we’re just STOKED, I mean absolutely floored, that we have some of this to share with y’all!
