Set in the north of Italy and near the borders of Austria and Slovenia, the Tarlao winery is in the ancient Roman city of Aquileia – a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the early Roman Empire. Francesco Tarlao is the winemaker here at his family’s long-time estate, though perhaps you know him by his stage name… DJ REFOSK! (It’s ok if you don’t…we’re still waiting on his “big break”...)
When he’s not spinning the turntables, he makes a portfolio of stunning whites that are as pure, vibrant, and outwardly pleasing as any white wines, from anywhere else in the world! Sauvignon Blanc (though they simply call it “Sauvignon”), Friulano, and Pinot Bianco – each grown on different soils and separate blocks of Tarlao’s seventeen acres of vineyards – all made to capture and express some seriously unbeatable freshness, verve, and lightning-in-the-bottle intensity! I’ll put these beauties toe-to-toe with any aromatic, crisp whites from any region – and for the money…these simply CRUSH similarly priced offerings from California, New Zealand, Sancerre, and beyond! Tarlao Sauvignon Giona Aquileia 2023: Explosive aromas of pink grapefruit, kiwis, and lemon drops, with a salty, creamy mouthfeel punctuated with flint and river rocks. Crisp, bright, and grassy – with a lasting bite and surprising complexity…ELECTRIC! Call it a porch pounder, call it a poolside sipper, just don’t call it simple, though simply delicious sure fits!
Tarlao Friulano Albero del Noce Aquileia 2023: Floral with a bouquet of jasmine and white roses, with green almonds, ripe nectarines, and lightly salted Tuscan melon. Flavorful and powerful, yet bone dry, and loaded with warm and round textures. A peppery spice on the finish gives this depth and staying power. of the wine, with a pepper spice on the finish. A certified beauty!
Tarlao Pinot Bianco Poc ma bon Aquileia 2023: Honeysuckle, lavender, lemon zest, and crumbly chalk burst from the glass, soon followed by flavors of spiced pears, orange marmalade, and honeydew melon. Baking spices like clove and cardamom round out the finish, and the brightness of this dry wine keeps things hanging around long after each glorious sip! I plan to drink A LOT of this!
