Roberto Voerzio Barbera d'Asti Superiore 2022
Roberto Voerzio!!! One of the most sought-after names in the Italian wine game today – and we teamed up for a special bottle only available from us!
Getting invited to lunch with Roberto Voerzio several months back was incredible enough. But when we somehow turned that lunch into a Last Bottle exclusive bottling of his simply SPECTACULAR Barbera d'Asti Superiore?!?! I just don’t have the words!!!
Seriously, as the youngest of three, who started blabbering in my cradle long before either sibling was forming whole sentences – my mom can attest – being lost for words is a rare phenomenon. But I’m not sure the words exist to convince you – or anyone – just how amazing this is! At our CRAZY price?! He’s an absolute legend, and his Barolos are some of the best anywhere (and regularly trade hands for $200-$300 a bottle on the USA grey-market…) If you’ve never had HIS Barbera – then you’ve NEVER experienced anything like THIS! He’s a La Morra guy through and through (and one of the very last folks actually born in La Morra – thanks to a new hospital being built one commune over) who ONLY makes Barolo from his home region, as a rule. But he simply couldn’t pass up 4 hectares of nearby Barbera d’Asti – locally revered as the Queen of Piemonte wine. And like a Queen should…this RULES!
It opens with cedar and charred rosemary, with a building fruit profile of black plums, baked strawberries, and black cherries. While Barbera is typically known for its overt fruitiness – and usually compared to ripe Cali-Zinfandel – this is dark, brooding, salty, and savory…with a chalky limestone minerality and sanguine character that gives this incredible complexity. I was briefly tempted to describe it as rustic – because it is so wild and intense – but there is a simply ASTOUNDING amount of polish here, and each wild thread is gently reined in and woven into a tapestry of something profound and spellbinding…WOWZA! Lightly roasted coffee, darker than dark cocoa nibs, and the faintest whisper of Tahitian vanilla, too?! It’s almost poetic, and unquestionably romantic stuff! I’m IN LOVE!!! It even drinks like a fine, Right Bank Bordeaux – and will surely age for decades!
Dubious? I get it, truly. I would never have believed that Barbera could age so well, or taste so remarkably complex – but nearly two years ago, a couple of top Italian winemakers in their own right (Tancredi Biondi Santi and Emmanualle Graetz) ordered a bottle of Roberto Voerzio’s 2001 Barbera at our dinner in Montemerano – a two-star Michelin restaurant called Caino. The wine was TWENTY TWO years young, and one of the most surprising and impressive bottles I have ever tasted – bar NONE. It was undeniable…a true master was at work here. If anything, Roberto and his son, Davide, have only refined their skills over the last two decades. The grapes come from old vine plots in the Asti hills, grown on a blend of Piemonte’s famed clay and limestone (the same soils as Right Bank Bordeaux…interesting!) He ages in French barrique barrels, and now a couple years in bottle – this UNICORN of a Barbera is starting to prance mighty fine. UNDER $45 for a wine of this pedigree and potential is STAGGERING – and there’s no beating around the bush here, folks – YOU NEED THIS! Get three, or get thirty – and you will never regret it!
While it lasts!
**Getting back to that dinner in Italy – loads of Champagne, a life-changing 2001 Barbera from Roberto Voerzio, a two-star Michelin restaurant, and a post-dinner, 1:00 am soak in the famed Terme di Saturnia, with two of Italy’s best winemakers…easily one of the best nights of my life.**
