Nicolas Girard Sancerre Blanc 2023
SANCERRE! Turn up the Beastie Boys and just scream…“KIIIICK IT!”
I’ll say it again – there’s never enough bone dry, flinty Sauvignon Blanc from one of the greatest places on earth to grow it…so best JUMP, cannonball, and can-opener into the Sancerre pool A-S-A-P!!! 2023 is a MONSTER vintage – the low yielding trends of the past several vintages finally broke, and 2023 is going to be stellar…with the right producers at least. My boy NICOLAS GIRARD is most certainly that – as any one of you that have scored any of these last vintages is keenly aware! With the current threat of massive tariffs (200%!!) on all European wines, now is the time to snag some of the best-selling white in LB history. Hint: the last vintage of this sold out in less than 2 hours so you may want to skip ahead, snag a case, and come back to continue reading!
To score some scintillatingly fresh and uber-vibrant SANCERRE, at a stellar deal of a straight 50% OFF – welp, color me pink. And then tickle me. (Because that is apparently what tickled pink means…)
Anywho…just south of the village of Sancerre, brothers Anthony and Nicolas, are making beautiful, fresh, flinty Sauvignon Blanc from a wide range of terroir throughout the region. This iconic Sancerre estate goes back to 1875 (!), but the Girard family modernized the winery and vineyards when they bought the estate in 1973, and ever since it has become the base for not only the original estate, Domaine des Brosses – but also the offshoot brands by the new, younger generations of the Girard Clan. Alain Girard, Nicolas’ father, comes from several generations of winemakers in the tiny village of Chaudoux, located directly north of the famous town of Chavignol. Nicolas, and Anthony each have their own label, made in slightly different styles, but ALL absolutely slay at the increasingly rare price point of just $25 for bone-dry, ice-chilling, completely ELECTRIC Sancerre.
TANGY. Zesty. Crunchy like seashells, and salty, savory, and fresh like the best oysters you’ve ever had! It ZIPS and zags across your tongue with this frenetic burst of lemon/lime citrus freshness, then tart and sweet flavors of green apples, and this leafy, minty and lemon verbena, followed by pomelos, and crumbled river rocks, with the tart pucker of a still green plum. Like a plunge into an icy mountain stream (or for me…a headfirst dive into the frigid seas of the Aran Islands)! It’ll get your heart racing, folks…I promise you that! And that PRICE!!!! Get a lot – ‘cause you know you’re gonna want to sip on this all spring and all summer long! A bit more than last year, but only JUST! Get yours while it lasts!
