MYSTERY CAB THURSDAY! Oh baby, can’t you just TASTE it?! The luxury, the elegance, the unmistakable POWER that drives into the very marrow of your bones?! YES!!! You know this producer – a STAGS LEAP STAPLE since the 1970s – and their Cabernets (and even another scrappy little red blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah) have been critical darlings and TOP 100 mainstays for YEARS! They never fought it out with their neighbors over such trivialities as PUNCTUATION – they just pushed, and honed their eastern hillside selections of vines in the rugged hills and volcanic soils of the Stags Leap District. We scored this at the BEST PRICE ANYWHERE – but please, trust me here – we do NOT have enough. We accidentally popped this up for about a minute and a half during our most recent Harvest Marathon – so an already limited supply is even more so today!
I’ve been told by the powers that be to NOT dunk this from the free-throw line like our last Mystery Cab – but here are a few hints that I have faith will be useful to all of you aspiring detectives and hard-core wine lovers. And hey – even if you can’t guess…throw a little faith back my way…and I promise ye shall be rewarded! (Hallelujah!)
Ok, onto the hints:
- The founders are a father-n-son duo that famously claimed they had worked together so long that their story didn’t quite fit the usual second-generation trope but rather more of a one and a half generation model. (This is also a MONSTER clue, super-sleuths.)
- One 95 POINT review called this “succulent and mouthwatering” adding that it boasts “plenty of potential to age”.
- The winemaker has been at the helm for over FOUR DECADES – an incredible tenure for any winemaker at this level.
- The vineyards have been an important part of Napa’s grape growing history since the 1880s – even continuing through Prohibition (and the rumor is, a wee dram of some secret sauce was quietly produced and distributed to those in the know…).
So…any guesses? This beauty is bold and inviting straight from the cork pop – with a luscious profile of roasted herbs, black plums, blackberries, and succulent cherries, followed by this impressive array of “other” players like coffee, and wild mint, cedar, asphalt, and a lingering kiss of Tahitian vanilla. It’s dark, concentrated, and tremendously polished…as I’ve come to expect from this incredible producer! To have this at FAR & AWAY the best price in the world is a TREAT – you seriously can’t find this wine anywhere else for less, or even CLOSE to our incredible price!
