We’re headed back to the idyllic McDougall Ranch, way, WAY out there on the Sonoma Coast – closer to Mendocino than Russian River Valley – where some of the baddest and boldest pioneers of California Pinot Noir have set up shop. Hirsch, Marcassin, Flowers, and more – this is cool, windy, and wild…making for some of the most expressive and ageworthy pinot noirs on this planet! This 2022 is a beast – called out by Decanter as “one of the most perfumed and concentrated Pinot Noirs in Dan Ricciato’s lineup.” I am inclined to agree – the warmer conditions in 2022 made this cool site POP with extra levels of hedonistic richness, while still absorbing the cool, salty, mineral-driven elements that make this section of the Sonoma Coast so prized for Pinot. It’s pretty and floral, with a core of inky red fruits, and a smoky and spicy finish that lingers impressively. An undercurrent of river rock and chipped slate minerality grants this tension, while a heady ZIP of mandarin orange peel uplifts this all brilliantly.
