Le Clos du Caillou Côtes-du-Rhône Les Quartz 2021
A simply stunning, super clean, exceptionally pretty, outrageously quaffable Les Quartz for – get this – UNDER $30!!!! This is one of the all-time great quality-for-value wines in all of Rhône, or France – basically, ANYWHERE!
The ONLY reason this flies the Côtes-du-Rhône flag and isn’t Châteauneuf-du-Pape proper stems from what government-run state television in Russia might describe as “an armed misunderstanding”. In 1936, surveyors for the French Government trespassed upon the land that is now Clos du Caillou and were immediately run off by the armed caretakers tasked with maintaining this hunting lodge and retreat. No survey was done, and an oddly shaped hole in the heart-shaped Châteauneuf-du-Pape was the result. This Les Quartz is one giant potato-looking stone’s throw to the CdP boundary, with the same soils and climate. This downright STELLAR 80/20 Grenache and Syrah blend just slays at our price – easily competing with $75+ offerings from other nearby producers. One critic exclaimed that this drinks like “terrific village level Burgundy”, and that speaks perfectly to the high-toned red fruits, elegant florals, and supple spice profile of this beauty. 93 POINTS is just scratching the surface – this is one of the top wines to load up on for the rest of summer and for years to come!
