La Massa Giorgio Primo Chianti Classico Toscana 2001

La Massa, good people! DOUBLE 97 POINTS, 2001 vintage, of his best-of-the-best Giorgio Primo!  OVER 67% OFF!!! Booyeah!

Ok, show of hands…who absolutely scored the MOTHER of all Tuscan deals back in September when we laid this gorgeous beauty of perfectly aged Tuscan greatness across the Last Bottle altar? Have you tasted one yet?!?!

Mind-blowing, am I right? TWENTY-FOUR years young – unbelievably balanced and surprisingly fresh – tethered together so thoroughly as to make Tom Hanks and his boy, Wilson, proud! One of those 97 point reviews was just published a couple months back, the other a few years back in 2019 – so no…this isn’t resting on any laurels, or surviving off a bloated-long-forgotten reputation, my friends. The glass on my desk as I type this PROVES just how amazing these wines age over the years, decades, and beyond! Grab a few for yourself (and hurry!) if you don’t believe me! I am PUMPED we still have more – ‘cause I need another 6-pack…STAT! LA MASSA for da win!!!

“In beautiful condition…precise…full of life…with power, energy, drive…tantalizing.” I mean…YES!!! This Sangiovese-dominant iteration of Giorgio Primo (made shortly before he broke ties with the Chianti Classico Consorzio altogether and added his iconic spit-roasted-over-an-open-flame black rooster to the back of his labels) is simply phenomenal – a treat for lovers of rich, layered, immensely complex reds – with a simply PERFECT marriage of Tuscan greatness and Bordeaux intention. Reinforcements just arrived via refrigerated containers from Italy – with utterly IMMACULATE provenance – every last bottle coming STRAIGHT from La Massa’s idyllic Ponzano winery. Not gonna lie – I’m a bit jealous of these bottles – getting to spend 24 years at La Massa’s gorgeous property is my idea of a proper vacation…especially if Giampaolo (or as we like to call him, Giam-pagne, keeps the Champagne flowing)!

But, last bottle guy, WHATEVER does a 24-year-old Sangiovese and Bordeaux blend taste like? Oh. Ho. HO! In a word, EPIC. The black plums, and black cherries, with this white truffle aroma, and smoldering sage, with dusty oak, and old saddle leather, then fennel pollen, and iron ore, with this lingering core of blackberry coulis…just…AAAAAHHHHHH! Super-fresh, yet gorgeously mature, this top-of-the-portfolio bottling (named for Giampaolo’s firstborn son, Giorgio) showcases everything we love about La Massa. Wildly savory, brightly fruity, and elegantly spiced to give endless layers of sheer euphoria. UNDER $80 a bottle makes this an absolute STEAL – but for heaven’s sake, please move quickly – we cleared out the entire library on this one… and you don’t want to miss out!

While it lasts!!!

** Giampaolo is long-time friends with heralded Bordeaux wine whisperer Stéphane Derenoncourt and though he didn’t officially come onboard with La Massa for another few years – you can absolutely taste why these two became fast friends. Bordeaux meets Tuscany – in a way that highlights the best of both…sign me up! **
