Dave House in da HOUSE! Sorry…I pretty much had to. Anywho, unless you studied software engineering at Stanford – you probably have never heard of Dave House. I certainly hadn’t. He’s a former tech giant who rediscovered his agricultural roots atop the Santa Cruz Mountains’ famed “Chaine d’Or” – a coastal mountain ridge that is home to some of California’s best wineries (RIDGE and Mount Eden, anyone?!). He used – what I can only imagine amounts to some 70 quadrillion dollars – from being Intel’s top engineer in the Dot.Com boom to buy property in Saratoga, CA. As the suburban sprawl of Silicon Valley spread quickly and threatened the natural beauty and landscape, he bought parcel after parcel, atop a great hill, acquiring some 73 acres worth. (Again, in Silicon Valley real estate terms – it probably would have been cheaper to buy all of South Dakota.) He struck a deal with the legendary Mount Edens’ wine guru, Jeffrey Patterson, giving Jeff a deal on the fruit, and taking premium wine from a master winemaker off his own vineyards in return. Over 12 years, Jeffrey made the wines, while also teaching Dave’s son-in-law, Jim Cargill, the tricks of the trade.

Jim clearly paid attention. High-toned, floral and pretty, with roses and peonies, lavender and supple red cherries, black tea, cedar wood, and little jolts of baking spices throughout. Aromatically seductive, with a juicy, generous warmth to the fruit – like an old-school cherry soda concoction at a 50s pharmacy and soda shoppe. We got all we could – and this is sure to be gone in no time. I got a case…now it’s your turn! UNDER $20! Don’t just watch this Santa Cruz out the door!

While it lasts!
