Like a sunshine daydream of a vinous unicorn with incredible rainbow energy, HILLER IS BACK! Just landed from Austria, Last Bottler’s all-time fave Grüner at another electron-charging, WAY UNDER $20 price!! 91 POINTS and worthy of an entire shelf in my Daily Drinkers wine fridge! A cool drink of icy, pristine glacier water, a breath of fresh Alpine air, a rejuvenating polar-plunge in an ice-melt fed pond…THAT’S Hiller. Grown on what is known as the “Bohemian Massif” in Austria (lots of granite in the soil!), this life-giving wine is racy and hyper-fresh, floral and flinty, with a waxy texture and plenty of fresh rock minerality, paired with this zesty and zippy sensation of pomelo, and Bartlett pear, then Granny Smith apple, with notes of *almost* ripe honeydew melon, and this lingering finish of sweet grass – cool, spicy, and utterly captivating stuff!
And the PRICE…simply INCONCEIVEABLE! Drink a lot of Sauvignon Blanc? Try this for a rock-your-world experience! An addictive nectar that is terrifyingly easy to drink (I know because it is pretty early Monday morning writing this and my glass is already half-empty)...BRAVO Hiller! We love you! Bring this bottle of fresh making goodness into your life NOW, this is nothing short of life-sustaining juice! In Grüner we trust!
I am overcome with an irrepressible desire to eat a giant plate of schnitzel, and sip glass after glass of this fresh and lip-smacking ambrosia!! We’ve direct imported them for years and still love to reminisce about a visit to the winery, a hearty meal, and a post-midnight tasting that may have included my boss falling asleep on some barrels – ah, the good days! You’ve probably had some of the Hiller wines by now, and if not, well, I think you might need a long, ponderous look into the proverbial mirror. Simone and Hannes – two of the coolest Austrian winemakers/vintners you’ll ever meet – craft this and soooo many other delectable wines in the Weingut Jordan-Hiller portfolio.
The vineyards are rooted in the foothills of the Manhartsberg, in the Pulkau region, where two climates collide on two distinct ancient soil types that go back 555 million years!!! At this site the warmer, drier climate of the Weinviertel meets the harsh cooler climate of the Waldviertel – resulting in warmer, sunny days and bitingly cool nights throughout the growing season. What a mouthful…and no, I’m not talking about all those Austrian names I just threw your way!!! Hiller makes kickass Grüner that EVERY racy, clean, pure white wine lover should fall over themselves to get at this no-brainer price. ONLY $16!!! I mean, C’MON! We all sip this year after year, and believe us, we’ve heard your raves on all the past vintages! We buy as much as we can, but they don’t make much! Now, where are those freshly shucked oysters…?
