Gilles & Romain Collet Petit Chablis Récolte 2023

Who needs a springtime banger – the absolute crispiest and crunchiest bottle of Mentos-worthy freshness? You! Me! EVERYONE! Done and dusted. Petit Chablis in da HOUSE! Yes, it means “little Chablis”, but man, oh man…if ever there was a region ripe for re-classification, or at the minimum, some updated naming conventions…it is here! White Burgundy…UNDER $30?! Let’s GOOOOOO!!!
Ok, so Petit Chablis is tucked in right alongside the Grand Crus and Premier Crus of Chablis – but historically was less favored because in the olden days – exposed hilltops, with ripping winds, were quite unpredictable for grape growing. And hey, they still can be. But with the temperature in Chablis increasing regularly over the past few decades – you might have noticed more ripeness and more tropical flavors in those high-priced Grand Cru Chablis than ever before. Suddenly, those top o’the hill and cool climes of Petit Chablis look pretty darn good! And DAMNED if this isn’t ROCKING! The bountiful 2023 vintage is all about easy-drinking deliciousness…and this gorgeous beauty falls right in line. That flinty, chalky, OYSTER SHELL-Y goodness? You bet! The squeeze of lemon and lime, that tart pucker from a first bite of green apple? That too! A little raw almond, with honeysuckle on the finish? Sure thing, bub! This is 100% Chardonnay, from the absolute best place in the world to grow it, and it oozes classic Chablis vibes through and through!
And THAT PRICE?! Under $30 is a steal for ANY White Burg these days – and this will be standing toe-to-toe with Premier Cru and top village Chablis at twice the price! The Collets, mostly led by Romain and his irascible father Gilles, are a legendary family producer in Chablis – with access to fruit from killer plots across all levels of Chablis, and Chardonnay is their undivided focus. The next few months are going to be FILLED with this Petit Chablis as my go-to…in fact, I’m driving out to the coast with three bottles in the cooler right now…oysters and Petit Chablis for this Easter Sunday Funday!
