Domaine L'Abbe Dine Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge 2020

The Caribau sold out much faster than expected, but we have you covered with a stellar wine from one of the rising stars in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine L'Abbé Dine. The absolute finest, tastiest, staggeringly awesome Côtes du Rhône deal, still in time for prime back to school drinking!!! FIFTEEN American dollars for a wine made by the hyper-talented, one-woman show that is Nathalie Reynaud (who trained under none other than Southern Rhône’s most famous, multi-100-point winemaker of all-time, Philippe Cambie)!! Madness!

This family-run producer is doing everything right – one of our most epic French finds. Tasting in February at Nathalie’s winery in Châteauneuf-du-Pape was one of the greatest wine tastings I’ve ever had – in no small part because of the sheer quality and dedication revealed in each of her wines. (Her lovely children playing on pallets while we tasted, and her mother breaking out a decadent spread of baguettes, house-cured olives, cheeses, and foie gras didn’t hurt the experience, however.) I promise you, I drank every last sip of this over-delivering CdR – and didn’t spit a mouthful! (A decision I might have come to regret later, as it was 8 am, and we had three other visits in Chateauneuf that day… but STILL!) It’s that GOOD! Wine Advocate smartly called L'Abbé Dine out as “an estate that seems to be turning out better and better wine every vintage” with Jeb piping up a similar sentiment when he declared, "... the quality here has been on an upward trajectory, and this is an estate readers should keep on their radar." Understatements ALL, but trust us, this house simply CRUSHES it!

This is the perfect entry wine to fall madly in love with L'Abbe Dine…just fresh, vibrant, utterly classic Rhône wine to drink with reckless and feckless abandon. 80% grenache, then syrah and mourvedre, from the sandy soils of beautiful Courthezon – NOT across the river from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, NOT a few miles down the road, literally NEXT DOOR. I’m talking meters and yards, not miles and kilometers. Seriously, stand in the vineyards at Chateau Rayas, pick up a rock, and throw it east… it will land in Courthezon. The AROMAS! My word -- a bright and boisterous bouquet of violets and lilacs, with peppery notes of classic garrigue (roasted herbs de Provence), then jammy, but not overripe notes of raspberry, and blackberry, and black currant, and black plum…WOWEE! This is elegant and far easier to sip in the here and now than almost ANY CdP – but a depth and sensibility that offers nuance not often found in a FIFTEEN DOLLAR Côtes du Rhône!!! BACCHUS BE PRAISED…how does she do IT?!?! And how are we soooo lucky to score some of this?! Alright, your turn, good people…while it lasts!!!
