I love fall, and can’t wait for those cooler temps – but after a little Labor Day weekend pooltime with a bottle of Domaine Besson’s EPIC new Chablis – THAT, my friends, is a vibe I’m not yet ready to part with! Who’s with me?! DOMAINE BESSON in da HOUSE! This utterly sippable, gorgeously over-delivering bottle of Chablis is a stand-by at my house – and you long-time Last Bottlers have been loving on all things Besson for YEARS. This 2023 deserves a spot in the rotation without question – and at our UNDER $25 price? Load up fast is all I’m gonna say.
Camille and her brother Adrien are the 4th generation of Besson’s – farming prized parcels of every level of Chablis – Grand Cru, Premier Cru, Village, and Petit Chablis. Their single vineyard Crus offer up some of the best value anywhere in Burgundy (and beyond) – and this foundational Chablis gets a nice little BOOST from odds and ends of Grand Cru and Premier Cru parcels alike – changing ever so slightly from year to year. The result is seductively crisp with a perfect part Old World/part New World vibe – the acidity isn’t going to bore holes in your tongue like sucking on a mouthful of Atomic Warhead sour candies, but the ripe fruit and oak influence is kept right in that Goldilocks, just-right wheelhouse. The incomparable minerality of Chablis’ Kimmeridgian soils gives it backbone, and a little bit of time in bottle brings it all together like an overdue family reunion. It opens with this sexy flora note of honeysuckle, then some candied lemon drops, and these lingering orange blossom accents. Waves and waves of peaches and gun flint follow, with a twinge of fresh lemon verbena and white sage, before diving headlong into an ice-cold limeade. REFRESHING! A little bit of saltwater taffy and bright tingly acidity bring it all home, and then *POOF*! Where’d the bottle go?!
