Oh me, oh my…do I LOVE me some Sauternes! It’s seductively delicious, ages better than basically every wine on the planet, and it can be so, so, soooo good with the right meal. (Foie gras torchon? Blue cheese and walnuts? Apricot tarte tatin? Yes.) But the legendary Château Guiraud’s remarkable 2010? A no-brainer classic from a superb vintage that will drink like an absolute CHAMP for another 30+ years? Sign…me…UP!!! 65% sémillon and 35% sauvignon blanc – 100% jaw-dropping! The folks at Guiraud are making their best wines in centuries, and when we got the call – we snapped up every last bottle of this beauty!!! The winery goes all the way back to 1580, making luscious, long-lived, honey-drenched late-harvest wines. This was the first 1855 1er Grand Cru Classé estate in all of Bordeaux to convert to ORGANIC agriculture – starting a viticultural revolution for Sauternes in the late 90s. Just an exemplary house in Sauternes – combining centuries of tradition with cutting-edge technology. When it comes to Sauternes – the Black & Gold is always a good bet!
How’s it taste? Like the heavens opened, and unicorns cried happy, golden tears of joy over the fields of Bordeaux. So yeah…pretty darn good. LAVISH, yet terrifically balanced and humming with a beautiful line of acidity, and just PACKED with intense flavors of orange marmalade, apricot, hazelnuts, grilled pineapple, honey...I mean, seriously, you need to experience this! Incredibly long finish brings in a touch of peppery Szechuan spice to create a beautiful and complex experience that goes on FOREVER!!! At this head-spinner of a price, with these scores, and this heralded producer…there’s simply no reason to pass! An INSANE buy. 96 points, under $25 c’mon!!
