Château Gracia!!! One of the very first “GARAGISTE” wines of Bordeaux’s Right Bank that forever shifted the balance of power in the Bordeaux Class system! To have ANY of this is a marvel worthy of canonization – to have enough (barely, but still) for a daily offer is certifiably INSANE!!! For WHAT price?! A full $136 OFF??? Go, flee, fly – there simply isn’t time!
ANY savvy Bordeaux/Saint-Émilion aficionado knows Michel Gracia. A contractor and stone mason in the village OF Saint-Émilion his whole life, he laid stone at properties like Angelus, Cheval Blanc, and Petrus, among others. In 1994, after encouragement from Jean Luc Thunevin (ahem…another garagiste who launched all this craziness with Château Valandraud back in the early 90s), alongside his pal, Alain Vauthier of Ausone – Michel purchased just under 4 acres of prime vineyard next to Troplong Mondot. The rest, as they say, is history.
Impossible to find, rated off the charts, compared with favor the FIRST GROWTH Bordeaux on the regular – we have scored a small COUP in this parcel that just landed in the warehouse and is sure to leave just as quickly. The pricing is simply breathtaking – UNDER $80 for this is like finding a Monet waterlily painting at your local garage sale, in its original frame, with a signed and notarized certificate of authenticity…for about $50 bucks. I mean, C’MON!!!! Since his original vineyard purchase, he’s added a few more acres – this time next to the pristine and heavy-hitting Château Angelus. You CAN’T make this stuff up, people! Jeb admits he was “blown away” by this beauty in his 97+ point review, going on to say “it’s another magical vintage for this estate” that should age for up to THREE DECADES. We’re nearly a full decade in so far, and me-oh-my…this little angel can FLY!
Dusty plums, and heady kirsch, with sweet roasted almonds, worn saddle leather, dark chocolate shavings, and roasted thyme a’plenty. Then, your hair is blown straight back by an onrush of Mission figs and cherry compote, with crushed blackberries, and terracotta clay, with an iron-rich minerality, and this entrancing cigar box thing, culminating in this lip-smacking smoked paprika spiciness on a simply everlasting finish! HUH-TO-THE-ZAH, my people! Luscious, intense, and velvety smooth, this is full-bodied, full-throttle Right Bank righteousness – as bold and as powerful as they come! I kept this hidden under my desk for a full 6 HOURS before I let anyone know I opened it…and it just got livelier, and fresher, and younger before my very eyes! A real Benjamin Button of a wine – but not boring or pedantic like that three-hours-of-my-life movie I’ll never get back.
