Château Durfort-Vivens Le Hameau Margaux 2020
2nd Growth MARGAUX! 93 POINTS! And we’re the only spot in the U.S. of A. to have it! YES!
So…ever heard of a little estate called Chateau Margaux? You have?! Meet their sister winery…same revered location along the Left Bank of the Gironde, same iconic Lurton family ownership…same ROCKSTAR winemaker consultant Eric Boissenot (who’s served as winemaking guru to FOUR of the five First Growth Bordeaux Estates – Latour, Lafite-Rothschild, Margaux, and Mouton-Rothschild)...for NOWHERE near those kind of prices!
Get this…ONLY $40!!! Ummmm…for real? YES! You can scarcely find a decent Fifth Growth Bordeaux for under $75 these days – and let me just scream at the top of my lungs – this is LIGHT YEARS beyond just “decent”...this ROCKS! 72% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 8% cabernet franc from single 10-hectare parcel in the Margaux village of Cantenac, less than a mile from the heralded sister property of Chateau Margaux, all farmed with ORGANIC and BIODYNAMIC practices? I mean…C’MON!!!
This is a world-breaker, folks. The historic Chateau Durfort-Vivens stayed in the same family, passing down from one generation to the next over SEVEN CENTURIES!! Eventually, in 1961, they were snatched up by their neighbors at Chateau Margaux, run by the heralded Lurton family. Centuries prior, America’s first wine expert, and cherished Bordeaux connoisseur, Thomas Jefferson (third president of the U.S. too, but never mind that…) ranked this stunning GRAND CRU estate JUST after the famed 1st Growths of Lafite, Latour, and Margaux! Here, in the most excellent 2020 Bordeaux vintage, these folks have done it again – and I simply can’t wrap my oversized noggin around this EPIC “Le Hameau” bottling.
The folks at the winery make this small production, terroir-focused wine to express the elegant side of their vineyard parcels – and boy howdy, does this deliver! Perfectly ripe, just fit-to-burst with black plums, with this inky, blackberry juiciness, some uplifting accents of Bergamot tea, and lavender, with this chocolate-dipped cherry note that gets me straight drooling. Luscious doesn't begin to do this justice – silky, velvety, micro-suede levels of smoothness, with no rough edges anywhere, but still boasting a mineral-rich and powerful core that makes this an ideal cellar-worthy steal. This tastes like something in the $150+ range in my book. Tasting this blind against the 97 pt. Grand Vin – and this was my favorite. (For FAR less $$$!) Get a few, or more and you’ll definitely be thanking me later!!!
** 85% of this wine is fermented and aged in clay amphora, with the remainder in new French oak. The soft, almost creaminess of this wine might be the most noticeable effect – but however they did it…I just want more and more!!! Thomas Jefferson – well played, good sir! **
