Gonet is a goner (we warned you), but everybody say “YVES”! No, not yes, Yves (pronounced "Eve")! As in YVES RUFFIN, good people! I haven’t been this PUMPED for Champagne since I heard that regular consumption might prevent sudden cardiac arrest! (Thank you, Canadian Journal of Cardiology!) Now – I’m betting you’ve never heard of these OUTSTANDING Champagne makers – and that’s ok…most people haven’t. They make wine out of a TINY cellar, that use to be their garage, on the ground level of their modest home (and tasting office). Their bottles are stored in hand-dug chalk caves, scratched out meticulously by the last three generations of the Ruffin family, from the back of their garage into the hills and under the vines of Avenay-Val-d’Or in Champagne’s famed Vallée de la Marne.
They almost…ALMOST…closed for good back in 2019. Thierry Ruffin passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, and his wife, Sylvie, was struggling to make it all work. She had stopped bringing in fruit in 2017, and the vin clair (still wine before Champagne is finished in the bottle) hadn’t been moved from the barrel. In swooped her young (recently a legal adult) son Antonin, alongside his partner Cecile – and HUZZAH!!! Yves Ruffin was made for a brand new generation.
And – TRUST ME – you are going to be THRILLED that it was! This complex, layered, and utterly MYSTIFYING Champagne is crafted from 100% of the HOUSE RESERVES – a mix of Chardonnay from the 2016 and 2017 harvests and Pinot Noir of every harvest from 2008 to 2017! The wine spent two years maturing in large Acacia and Oak barrels, followed by over 4 years aging on the lees in bottle prior to disgorgement. ONLY five thousand bottles (just over 400 cases) of this incredibly rare RESERVE were ever made – and just to keep the lights on and their dream alive – Antonin and Cecile bottled virtually ALL of the family reserves into this unique cuvée. 96 POINTS is what the lone critic that tasted this had to say – but truly, this is beyond scores. Beyond marketing. This is a microcosm of history, a bottled tale of family excellence achieved through generations of perseverance and loss, and hope, and dare I say…DESTINY! One of my favorite Champagne visits of all-time…and you KNOW that is saying something!
The wine? It almost defies categorization. Flecks of iron, and danky, saturated herbs, with the petrichor of a coming storm, leading to a fruit profile of lemons, and limes, with sour cherries, umeboshi plums, baked apples, and zippy pomelo, uplifted with floral notes of violets and peonies, and then grounded with mineral elements of crumbled chalk, and sea salt, with this autolytic umami-ness of sourdough boules, topped with black trumpet mushrooms, and drizzled with fine Modena sabba. Crazy stuff – bordering on transcendental! I’m about to make a suggestion I have never made before…drink this SLOWLY, carefully, and enter into a trance-like state of preponderance and existential wonderment! You can thank me later. Seriously, I can think of no better wine to kick off an epic Harvest Marathon week to come – but for all that is holy, and good, and pure – DO NOT hesitate!!!
