2014. 2015. 2017. Another stunning array of break-the-interwebs cabernet sauvignon from the world’s most expensive trailer park. This former FIVE STAR resort may have burned in Napa’s Glass Fire some years back…but like a phoenix rising from the flames…these spectacular wines are BACK! Ok, you obviously know To Kalon – the historic OAKVILLE parcel that year after year takes the crown for the most $$$$ fruit in all of Napa Valley. The team at Calistoga Ranch paid top dollar for access to this hallowed ground, and boy-oh-boy, did they ever CRUSH it! And these vintages! 2014 is one of my all-time favorites for Napa – and this one performs beyond my wildest dreams – silky, perfumed, layered with brooding dark berries and cherries, and this hypnotic sandalwood and vanilla thing…just entrancing. Then, 2015 – the fourth in a string of highly praised “drought years” for Napa with a tendency towards hulking structure and power, and inky, ripe fruits buttressed by volcanic minerals and an almost CdP character of roasted Herbs de Provence. And last, the sleeper in the trio – 2017. Have you had a great 2017 lately? This will surprise you! Supple, with ripe red fruits, and warm, sun-kissed earth, this is a spicy and bright offering that manages to steal a bit of the spotlight from the decade’s more famous vintages. For drinking young…it is my favorite of the three…though fo’ real though – you’d be a fool not to happily sip on any one of these legendary cabernets!
