Angwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Napa Valley 2014
UNDER $40? For a pristinely aged, ready-to-drink, single-vineyard HOWELL MOUNTAIN Cabernet Sauvignon?! 93 POINTS and sure to impress!
2014! One of my personal favorite Napa vintages of all-time…for WHAT price?!?! YES!!! Take the elegance and aromatics of a cooler, steady-Eddy growing season, with the ripeness and concentration that is so definitively Napa – then add the structure, and unsurpassed ageability of Howell Mountain and those red volcanic soils…and POW! One tremendous Cabernet at a simply ga-ga 77+% OFF!!!
So…ever heard of Philip Togni? The iconic, notoriously mercurial, completely without rival mountain Cab specialist? (Crafted the famed 1969 Chappellet Cab that Galloni called “one of the greatest wines ever made in Napa”...) Welp, Jon Larson, the man behind Angwin Estate until his passing in 2022, was convinced by Philip to turn the family farm atop Howell Mountain into a vineyard in 2002, and Jon “retired” from his thoracic surgery practice in order to absorb the wisdom and knowledge that Togni offered. Within a few years, his TINY 2-acre vineyard was producing classic Howell Mountain Cab, and his first vintage in 2011 still stands as one of my favorite Howell Mountain reds. Along with pointers from Philip Togni and his daughter Lisa, Jon also got some help from David Brown (Brown Estate)...and his surgical precision from his former career has paid dividends in the vineyard. The result is an absolute BANGER of Howell Mountain Cab – as elegant as they come, but with a power and structure that ensure this 11 years young beauty has plenty left in the tank!
Roses and crème de cassis, with a veritable smörgåsbord of brambly fruits like raspberries, blackberries, boysenberries, and more – in all its teeth-staining, happy-making glory! Whispers of cedar, with pencil lead, tart black plums, and a smoky, bay laurel freshness. You’d never in a million lifetimes guess this was already over a decade old…brilliantly ruby and vibrantly fresh – just impeccable. Wine Spectator called 2014 a “dream vintage” for Napa…and this would be “Exhibit A” in the trial of the century! 93 POINTS and UNDER $40 makes this the ultimate collectible Howell Mountain gem…while it lasts, at least!
